Once upon a time, a prince named Charming went to awaken his love with a kiss, but his smelly breath woke her up first. They didn’t live happily ever after. There are many reasons for stinky breath, and one of them is periodontal disease, a grave disease impacting the pearly whites and gums.

Periodontal disease is very prevalent in the US, and there are more than 3 million cases reported yearly. Periodontal disease is also more prevalent in men than in women, and the elderly are more susceptible to it than those under about 20 years of age. It is always among the most common dental ailments, and we see patients with gum disease every hour.

There are multiple different products for treating gum disease. You may notice that many of the toothpastes currently available have advertisements for “gum disease control,” and you should know that this typically means that the toothpaste is fluoridated. Fluoride fights periodontal disease by strengthening the tooth enamel, making it harder for acids to consume away at the pearly whites. Since smelly breath is a symptom of periodontal disease, you may consider using mouthwash to mask your breath, but the greatest products for battling periodontal disease are still toothbrushes and floss.
